Senator Cassano Endorses Senate Democrats’ Push For Legalized Sports Wagering

Today, State Senator Steve Cassano (D-Manchester) voiced his support for the Senate Democrats’ announcement this week that legalizing competitive sports gambling is part of their priorities for the 2019 legislative session.

Senate Bill No. 665, “An Act Concerning Establishing Competitive Sports Wagering at Casinos and Off-Track Betting Sites on Certain Sporting,” would legalize wagering on competitive sports at casinos and off-track betting sites.

Sen. Cassano said that Connecticut needs to be raising revenues with other legislative priorities requiring new funding, and it is currently missing out on an opportunity to do so while other states, such as nearby Rhode Island and New Jersey, benefit from legalized wagering.

“We’ve been talking about it for months while others do it,” said Sen. Cassano. “The goal is to have a new stream of revenues. Sports betting is a national phenomenon, and people everywhere love the thrill of it. In my district, the restaurant Tomato Joe’s spent $500,000 on renovations in anticipation of legalized betting, and they’re still waiting for its legalization. Across the state, the casinos are in place, and we have six to eight off-track betting sites ready to go. March Madness, the Super Bowl, major sporting events are all income generators. With new programs being discussed, where does the money come from? Legalized sports wagering is the easy answer.”

Senate Democrats announced Wednesday they plan to push for legalized sports wagering as part of their “A Smart and Responsible Connecticut” agenda, intended to strengthen the state’s economy and economic competitiveness.
