Senator Ed Gomes (D-Bridgeport) and the Stratford delegation announced today that the State Bond Commission approved $52,746 for the Town of Stratford to replace an outdated playscape at the South End Community Center.

“You may think a playground is just something for kids to have fun, but they offer much more than that,” Sen. Gomes said. “Playgrounds are crucial to child development because they allow kids to explore their own physical abilities, to enhance their social skills by interacting with other children, and to create a sense of community. I am very happy the Bond Commission approved this funding to upgrade this old playscape in Stratford. Our children and our community will be better for it.”

“This is an investment in children, families and quality of life,” Representative Joe Gresko (D-Stratford) said. “The South End Community Center is home to before-school and after-school programs—and young children need a safe place to play and these funds will make that possible.”

“This is good news. The new playscape will get a lot of use by children who attend programs at the South End Community Center and by families who live in the neighborhood,” Representative Phil Young (D-Stratford) said.

The Town of Stratford is contributing more than $26,000 to the project.

“This grant represents part of an important partnership between the state and the Town of Stratford to update the playscape located at the South End Community Center,” said Stratford Mayor Laura Hoydick. “The work that the South End Community Center does for our communities is matchless, and the new playscape will be a great focal point for safe play and enjoyment for Stratford children and families. These state funds, combined our town investment, will ensure the project moves forward, and I thank all the state and local officials who have worked to make it a reality.”

The Bond Commission met today in the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
