Sen. Leone Blasts American Immigration Policy as “Broken” and “Arbitrary” Following ICE Deporation of Stamford Mother

Miriam Martinez Lemus, the Stamford mother of two children who came the America at age 27 to escape violence in Guatemala, has lost her bid to stay in the country.

Today, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement ruled that it would not grant Lemus another stay of her deportation—stays it had been granting since 2012. She was expected to be on a plane to Guatemala at 3 p.m.

Lemus is married to an American citizen and has two children, ages 10 and 12, one of whom has juvenile Type 1 diabetes and who needs constant medical attention and care.

“Given that this mother and member of our community entered our country legally claiming political asylum, and that she is now faced with deportation after a half-decade of being granted stays, it’s clear that America’s immigration policy is broken and is wielded in an arbitrary and unfair manner,” Sen. Leone said. “It’s cruel, and I urge ICE to reconsider its decision to deport Miriam, especially since her children will remain here in the United States.”
