Leone Encourages Public Input on Transportation Investment Plan

State Senator Carlo Leone (D-Stamford), who is Senate-Co-Chair of the legislature’s Transportation Committee, today attended Governor Dannel Malloy’s press conference which unveiled the governor’s proposed revenue package to stabilize the state’s Special Transportation Fund (STF) and allow for critical investments in the Connecticut’s transportation system.

In December, Gov. Malloy said that without new revenue, the STF will be in deficit by later this year. The governor then indefinitely suspended $4.3 billion in projects affecting every town in Connecticut, including critical improvements to the I-91/Route 15 interchange on the Charter Oak Bridge, the replacement of the Waterbury Mixmaster, and the widening of I-95 from Bridgeport to Stamford.

Gov. Malloy today proposed four specific actions to stabilize the STF and bring critical projects back online:

  • A seven-cent increase in the gas tax, gradually implemented over four years
  • Implement statewide electronic tolling beginning in 2023
  • Establish a $3 per tire fee on tire purchases
  • Accelerate the transfer of car sales tax by two years

“What is clear is that Connecticut’s transportation system is facing a crisis and that doing nothing is neither a solution nor affordable,” Sen. Leone said. “The Transportation Committee will raise the tolls issue and the public and legislators must weigh in on the discussion. The economic success of Connecticut’s future is directly correlated to how we proceed. What I will not support is for our roads, railways, buses and bridges to fall into continual decline.”
