Duff Appoints Norwalk Teacher to Commission on Children

NORWALK, CT—Today, Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) announced that he and Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D-Berlin/Southington) appointed Norwalk Public School teacher Dr. Aneury “Reese” Morales to Connecticut’s Commission on Children.

Dr. Morales has served a number of roles in the Norwalk public school system since 2003. He currently works as an ESL teacher for 9th through 12th grade at Norwalk International Academy. Before that, Dr. Morales spent five years working for the school district as a Data Testing Facilitator. From 2006 to 2010, he taught Spanish at Brien McMahon High School after spending three years at West Rocks Middle School teaching English as a second language.

“As a longtime Norwalk educator, Dr. Morales will be an important voice for kids in our community and throughout the state of Connecticut,” said Senator Duff. “His experience both in the classroom and at the district level gives him a great perspective for the commission. I know he will be a strong advocate for improving the health and education of our children.”

“I am excited for Dr. Morales to join the Commission on Children,” said Rep. Aresimowizc. “His lengthy teaching background in ESL will bring a much needed perspective to the commission as it develops policies that are in the best interests of the children of Connecticut.”

The appointment is effective immediately and expires on June 30, 2018, or until a successor has been appointed and qualified.

“I am humbled and honored by this opportunity to represent early childhood and K through 12 teachers of the state of Connecticut as well as the Latino community at large as a member of the board of the Commission on Children,” Dr. Morales. “I’m very grateful to Senator Duff for this appointment.”

The Commission on Children was originally created by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1985 to promote public policies in the best interest of children, study child trends and assess programs and practices in state agencies as they affect children, and disseminate information and research data regarding the status of children and children’s programs in Connecticut.

Additionally, the commission brings together the various levels of government, along with the private sector, nonprofit agencies, philanthropy, and families to bolster child outcomes, and makes recommendations to the legislature and the governor for systems reform and model policies that will improve child outcomes in health, safety, and learning.

Dr. Morales received his B.A. in Psychology from Southern Connecticut State University, his Masters in Elementary Education from the University of Bridgeport, and his Doctorate in Instructional Leadership from Argosy University in Phoenix, Arizona.

Born in Puerto Rico, Dr. Morales lives in Norwalk.
