Senate Majority Leader Duff Proposes Bill to Allow Electric Vehicle Manufacturers to Sell Directly to Consumers

Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) today announced that he has proposed legislation that permits manufacturers of electric vehicles to sell directly to consumers.

“Embracing electric vehicles continues the work we have done in Connecticut to bring new and emerging technologies into our state,” said Sen. Duff who last week introduced Senate Bill 3, An Act Concerning the Licensing of New and Used Car Dealers. “Allowing customers to purchase electric cars without leaving the state not only benefits our consumers, but also Connecticut’s economy.”

“We need to embrace companies that express a sincere desire to invest and create jobs in Connecticut,” said Representative Tony Guerrera, chair of the Transportation Committee. “Telsa is an innovative company that will revolutionize transportation in the coming century. I’m proud to be a part of the effort that will allow Tesla in our state and create jobs.”

This bill, which is not limited to Tesla, would allow electric car companies that do not already have a physical presence in the state to have up to three dealerships in Connecticut.

“Tesla is more than just an automaker—we’re an innovation company with a clear mission: building increasingly affordable electric vehicles to accelerate the worlds’ transition to sustainable transport,” said Jim Chen, Tesla’s VP of Regulatory Affairs & Associate General Counsel. “Our mission to educate the mass market on electric vehicles is very much in line with the state’s leadership in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and more than 1,000 of our cars are already registered in the state. But right now, even test-driving a Tesla requires Connecticut citizens to cross state lines. It shouldn’t be so difficult for customers to try, and buy, an eco-friendly car that continues to set the forward-moving trends of the transportation industry.”

Currently, there are more than 1,000 Tesla owners in the state.
