East Hartford 5th-grader Elena Tipton sits at her desk flanked by her parents, siblings and State Senator Tim Larson before her inauguration as Connecticut’s first Kid Governor in a ceremony at the Old State House in Hartford. Elena ran against seven other candidates from across the state and won on her “Campaign for Kindness” platform. Elena is proposing establishing the 13th of each month as “Kindness Day", establishing “buddy benches” for kids to find buddies on school playgrounds, and would like to solicit examples of kindness by kids on her blog at http://CT.KidGovernor.org/blog.

Today, Senator Tim Larson (D-East Hartford) joined state officials at Connecticut’s Old State House for the inauguration of East Hartford’s Elena Tipton as Connecticut’s 2016 Kid Governor.

“It’s wonderful seeing Elena and other kids her grade get involved with and learn about local government like this,” said Sen. Larson. “Congrats to Elena on winning the election. With her message of kindness, I’m proud to have her representing East Hartford kids and kids across the state.”

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill delivered the Connecticut’s Kid Governor Oath of Office and Senator Larson delivered remarks to the group of students, teachers, and other guests. After the ceremony, Diane Smith, the Senior Producer For Program Development for Connecticut Network (CT-N), moderated a “press conference” with the students. Following the “press conference” there was an educational program, during which students participated in activities about the three branches of government.

This past November, hundreds of 5th graders across the state participated in the election of the first ever Connecticut’s Kid Governor through a program created by Connecticut’s Old State House. Kid Governor candidates submitted campaign videos outlining:

  • Why they want to be Connecticut’s Kid Governor.
  • Their leadership qualities and skills.
  • A community issue that they want to address and why it’s important.
  • A three-point plan that will help 5th graders across Connecticut make a difference on that issue.

Elena Tipton, a fifth-grader at Thomas S. O’Connell Elementary School in East Hartford, won the November election. She ran on a Campaign for Kindness platform with a 3-point plan of action.

  1. Make the 13th day of every month “Kindness Day” and create a blog where students and schools can share the “awesome” acts of kindness that they are doing.
  2. Work with kids and adults to bring Christian Bucks’ Buddy Benches to school playgrounds in CT—Elena has set a goal for 10 schools in our state to work toward getting Buddy Benches.
  3. Listen to the students of CT to find out great things happening at their schools so that we can all recognize and celebrate how awesome kids in CT are.
