Senate President Martin M. Looney (D-New Haven) released the following statement regarding claims made by Republicans during their pre-legislative session press conference:
“The Republicans couldn’t even wait for the opening of the General Assembly session before embracing the dark side of partisan politics and resorting to a gross political stunt.
“Sadly, the Republicans are the party of ‘no’. They voted ‘no’ on historic property tax relief; they voted ‘no’ on bringing Jackson Labs to Connecticut; they voted ‘no’ on partnering with United Technologies. The Republicans have been on the wrong side of history on nearly every important economic development and job creation effort of the last five years.
“These are also the same Republicans who walked out of budget negotiations.
“Unfortunately, I believe that going forward we will only hear more fear, misinformation and bombast from Republicans, who seem intent on tearing down all that is promising and successful in Connecticut in the name of politics.
“The Republican leaders have been in the General Assembly long enough to know that our formal budget process begins with the Governor’s recommended adjustments followed by the engagement through public hearings and committee votes of the Appropriations and Finance Committees. The GOP leaders’ demands seek to expand their own role and to disenfranchise committee members by undermining the committee process for their own partisan ends.”
