America’s pre-eminent law enforcement agency says crime of all types has plummeted across our nation in the first few months of 2024.
One June 10, the FBI released its Quarterly Uniform Crime Report for January, February and March of 2024. The report shows that – compared to the first three months of 2023 – overall violent crime in America has decreased by 15.2 percent, with murder decreasing by 26.4 percent, rape decreasing by 25.7 percent, robberies decreasing by 17.8 percent, aggravated assaults decreasing by 12.5 percent, and property crime decreasing by 15.1 percent.
The June report comes of the heels of the October 2023 FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) which showed that violent crime in America fell 6% from 2021 to 2022, with murders tumbling 13%, rape down 12%, burglary down 10%, and robbery and aggravated assault both dropping 5%.
“This progress we’re seeing is no accident,” President Biden said two weeks ago when the June FBI UCR report came out. “My administration is putting more cops on the beat, holding violent criminals accountable, and getting illegal guns off the street — and we’re doing it in partnership with communities. As a result, Americans are safer today than when I took office.”
In Connecticut, the FBI found an overall 4% reduction in crime from 2021 to 2022, including a 13% reduction in violent crime, a 13% drop in homicides, an 18% reduction in robberies, and a 3% drop in property crimes. These statistics made Connecticut the third-safest state in America in 2022, according to the FBI, which gets its crime statistics from more than 15,000 local police departments.
