Honoring a Family of Patriots in Middletown

Senator Doyle with Bottis
I was joined by Veterans' Affairs Commissioner Sean Connolly and Middletown Mayor Dan Drew to present the Connecticut Veterans Wartime Service Medal to John Botti and his son, John Botti, Jr. The Bottis are true patriots, and I'm very glad that we were able to personally thank them for their service alongside their friends and family. John Botti, Sr. served during World War II and the Korean War. John Botti, Jr. had a 37-year military career, during which he served his country at posts around the world, including taking part in Operation Iraqi Freedom and working at the Combat Support Hospital in West Hartford. The sacrifices made by this family have kept our country safe and preserved the American way of life. It's important that we make every effort to thank Connecticut's brave veterans and their families for everything they have done for us.

Prior to the General Assembly establishing the Connecticut Veterans Wartime Service Medal in 2005, the State of Connecticut had not honored its veterans with a wartime service medal since World War I. Anyone who served in the armed forces during a time of war and was a Connecticut resident at the time, or currently lives here, is eligible for the award. Many veterans from the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq received the medal as part of their discharge packets, but many veterans who served prior to 2005 are unaware of the medal's existence. Any veteran who believes they may be eligible for the medal may contact my office.
