Summer Driving Season Begins with Gas Prices at 11-Year Lows

gas pumpThe AAA notes that the 2016 summer driving season is officially underway, and drivers are paying the lowest gas prices for this time of year in more than a decade.

Gas prices for the Memorial Day holiday were the cheapest since 2005--11 years ago--and were down 42 cents per gallon versus last year's holiday.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Connecticut as of June 3, 2016 was $2.46 per gallon--the same price it was in June of 2005!

I hope you enjoy the savings that these very low fuel prices are providing to you and your family, even as you enjoy a vacation or some sightseeing across our great state this summer!

A Manufacturing Comeback

Senator Doyle visiting manufacturer
It was recently reported that manufacturing in Connecticut is on the rebound, and the state is making valuable investments in community college school-to-work programs that are benefiting both employees and employers.

State officials and executives from Electric Boat and Sikorsky Aircraft touted Connecticut's advanced manufacturing programs at Asnuntuck, Housatonic, Manchester, Middlesex, Naugatuck Valley, Quinebaug Valley and Three Rivers community colleges.

Manufacturing employs about 160,000 people in Connecticut and has been up in each of the last three months over the same period in 2015, according to the state Department of Labor--and those jobs pay an average annual salary ranging between $38,000 and $74,000.

More than 4,600 companies in Connecticut are looking for qualified workers, and about 98 percent of the 500 students who graduate from one of Connecticut's advanced manufacturing centers in our public technical school system will get a job.

I'm happy to see our investments in school-to-work programs paying off for both state residents and our blossoming manufacturing sector!
