Cleaning Up Our Community

Duff D.O.T. video
This week, I wanted to publicly thank the Department of Transportation for helping to fix some long-neglected fencing and landscaping around Norwalk.

Last fall, at my request, we drove around the Route 7 Expressway and I-95 to look at neglected areas that needed attention in order to make our city more attractive.

Since then, and thanks to our mild winter, DOT workers have replaced 1,200 feet and repaired 540 feet of fencing, cleared a lot of brush and cleaned up litter.

There are a lot of good things happening in our community and we should put our best foot forward on both the little things and the big things.

Honoring Lifesaving Norwalk Firefighters

Senator Duff with Norwalk firefightersIt was an honor last week to visit the Norwalk Fire Department headquarters to recognize four Norwalk firefighters whose quick response saved a life on February 23rd. On that day, Norwalk firemen Kevin (Skip) Gilchrist, Jesse Granton, Patrick Marro and Captain Michael McCallum were leaving ShopRite on Connecticut Avenue when they witnessed the store's manager having a massive heart attack.

As a team, the four administered CPR and used a defibrillator and revived the man within a minute. Their actions that day reflect the professionalism, dedication and heroism that exemplifies the Norwalk Fire Department.

Helping Veteran-owned Small Businesses

Senator Duff at Vets Small Biz press conferenceOn Wednesday I stood side-by-side with veteran small-business owners and a bipartisan group of state senators in support of a bill to support veteran-owned small businesses by providing additional bidding preferences under state contracting laws.

Later that day, the Senate passed the legislation making Connecticut the most "vetrepreneur" friendly state in the nation.

Retaining and attracting veteran-owned businesses is a priority for the Senate Democrats as part of our larger commitment to those who served our nation. This legislation is a continuation of a multi-year focus by the General Assembly-led by the Senate Democrats-on improving the lives of our vets, supporting them in every way possible and helping to ensure they can earn a living.
