Investing in Education

Columbus Magnet SchoolLast week, I helped cut the ribbon on Phase 1 of the Columbus Magnet Schoolyard Habitat. The project--the first one designated in Norwalk by the Connecticut Audubon and U.S Fish & Wildlife Service--provides an oasis of nature in the middle of the city and is the result of months of hard work to turn the campus into a refuge for wildlife and a powerful learning tool for students.

Students, staff and community volunteers helped put Columbus Magnet's plan into action--planting native plants for birds and pollinators, creating an outdoor classroom, utilizing a rain barrel to recycle rainwater and installing birdhouses.

The school's habitat work was fueled by a mini-grant provided by Audubon Connecticut, and made possible through support from the 1830 Foundation, Chisholm Thomson Family Foundation, Grace Community Church, Long Island Sound Study, Long Island Sound Futures Fund, Norwalk PAL and the Tools for Life Foundation.

I want to thank Audubon Connecticut, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the leadership team at Columbus Magnet for making this project possible.

Side by SideThat same day, I was proud to join educators, board members and elected officials at Side by Side Middle School to announce that the General Assembly gave its final approval to $2.5 million in funding, that I secured in the bill, to help Side by Side build a new, permanent middle school.

Investing in school buildings is important because it helps create positive learning environments which can assist in motivating students to engage in the learning process. Side by Side's modular buildings have served the school well since the mid 1990's, but they are becoming increasingly expensive to repair and are at the end of their useful life. I am proud to have helped secure this investment by the state which will allow the Side by Side School to continue to invest in its students. Eight-seven percent of Side by Side students are from Norwalk.

In the same bill, Norwalk Public Schools also received almost $900,000 for a construction reimbursement, which is on top of the $1.4 million grant for school improvements.

Economic Update

For the first time in 12 months, single-family home sales in Connecticut showed a gain in median sales price. Total sales volume was also at its highest in nine years.
