Expanding Access to Life-Saving Drugs

1st responderConnecticut, like many other states throughout the country, is facing epidemic levels of opioid drug abuse and addiction. No community is safe from the threat of opioid addiction. This year I will be supporting a bill that will make it easier for first responders and citizens to acquire naloxone, an opioid reversal drug. This bill requires municipalities to include naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, in their existing emergency medical services plan so that all first responders will have access to it. I am also working to make it available for people to buy over the counter so that families can have it on hand to prevent the death of a loved one who is struggling with addiction. By making this treatment more available, I believe we will save lives and help people begin their recovery from addiction.

The rate of opioid abuse and addiction has skyrocketed in recent years. Deaths from drug overdoses, many of them caused by heroin or prescription opioids, have become the leading cause of injury death in the United States. The rate of overdoses caused by opioids nearly quadrupled from 1999 to 2013. Deaths related to heroin saw a 39 percent increase between 2012 and 2013. We are in the midst of a public health crisis, and swift action is needed to help reverse this alarming trend.
