Secure Drop-off for Unused Prescriptions

prescriptions
Last week, I joined the New Britain Police Department to announce a new, secure drop-off box where city residents can safely dispose of medications. We've all heard tragic stories of family members falling victim to the abuse of prescription painkillers and other medications. This drop-off box eliminates that risk and ensures medications are safely disposed of.

The drop-off box is located in the lobby of the New Britain Police station, located at 10 Chestnut Street. No appointment or forms of ID are required. Use of the box is free and confidential. Residents can simply stop by the police department and drop their unwanted drugs, medicines, vitamins or pet medicines into the container. The only items that will not be accepted include needles or other sharp objects, hazardous waste, thermometers and personal care products.

Last year, the CDC reported that people who use prescription opioid painkillers are 40 times more likely to abuse or be dependent on heroin. Every year there is a significant increase in heroin deaths. From 2014 to 2015, heroin deaths increased by 27 percent in Connecticut and according to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, 723 people died in 2015 from heroin, cocaine or other drugs such as morphine.
