Supporting Minority-Owned Businesses

Senator Gomes with small businessmenSince the Great Recession, Connecticut began offering programs that provide funding and other assistance to small businesses. Last week, I supported a new law to ensure that small, minority-owned businesses receive funding through these programs so as to maintain their growth and success in Connecticut's underserved communities.

Specifically, this law establishes up to two new loan funds within the Small Business Express program to provide loans to eligible small minority-owned businesses. The Department of Economic and Community Development will be required to provide grants to up to two eligible minority business development entities. The development entities will administer the funds and review and approve loans to minority-owned businesses.

Our local economies grow thanks to the strength of our small businesses. Now with this new law we will make sure government support reaches all small businesses in all our communities.
