Bringing Guilford's Green Patrol to Hartford

Green Team
I had the pleasure of welcoming Guilford Lakes' Green Patrol to the State Capitol last week. The Green Patrol is a group of young student environmental activists from Guilford Lakes Elementary School. The Green Patrol led a fight to eliminate Styrofoam products from Guilford schools, which was recently adopted by the Guilford Board of Education. You are never too young to become an environmental crusader! We could all learn from this talented group of young environmentalists.

Since 2008, Sue Ireland and Pam Medveky have spent their time educating and empowering Guilford students as to how they can create a greener environment. Together they have been able to accomplish many recycling initiatives. The Green Patrol now numbers over 150 students.

Working with Shoreline Business Leaders

Next week, I will be hosting the first-ever Shoreline Economic Strategic Planning Summit with the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce. We have invited business leaders from our region to share their input and ideas about the key drivers of economic activity and job growth.

The goals of the economic summit are to highlight our strategic assets and most promising business development opportunities, to identify the most common barriers to business growth and success, to outline the most actionable ways that government and business can work together to improve our competiveness, and to brainstorm about new strategies for collective action. I look forward to this unique opportunity to hear from the business leaders in our community about how we can all work together to strengthen the economy of our region and our state.

"Life Within the Journey" Comes to the State Capitol

Caring for Kids
Over the last few months, I have worked with The Circle of Care for Families of Children with Cancer to bring the "Life Within the Journey" photo exhibit to the State Capitol. This week, Circle of Care, in partnership with renowned photographer Jeanna Shepard, presented a provocative exhibit featuring intimate portraits of Connecticut pediatric cancer patients who each tell a story about the attributes that characterize the very real journey of treatment. This exhibit illuminates the power behind the children who so bravely face this disease. The love, compassion, courage and defiance depicted in these photos change the narrative around pediatric cancer, from an image of sorrowful sick children with bald heads and IV poles, to one that vivifies these children as the people they are, and therefore how they need to be supported.

As a survivor of childhood cancer, it is important to me that people see these positive images of children confronting the challenge that cancer poses with such strength. If you were unable to attend the event, "Life Within The Journey" can also be viewed at the Smilow Cancer Center of Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. Circle of Care was born out of its experiences with children undergoing treatment at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. This photo exhibit was inspired by the amazing work of The Smilow Cancer Center's dedication to children and families who gracefully demonstrate, every day, that children are more than their cancer, and their journey through treatment is about more than IV poles and chemotherapy.
