Strengthening the Shoreline Business Community

Econ. Summit
I recently met with over 150 shoreline business owners and leaders for the first-ever Shoreline Economic Planning Summit. We invited business leaders from our region to share their input and ideas about the key drivers of economic activity and job growth.

Economic Development officials from multiple shoreline towns were on hand to meet with business leaders from the area. We had a beneficial conversation about some of the key drivers of economic activity in our region and how we can better capitalize on them. I believe that this meeting was an important step toward creating a more unified and cooperative business community along Connecticut’s shoreline.

Making Killingworth’s Sheldon Park Accessible to All

trailI am happy to announce that a grant has been awarded to the town of Killingworth that will allow the town to build a new, more accessible trail at Sheldon Park. The new, paved trail will be 860 feet long and 5 feet wide. It will run through Sheldon Park to provide the opportunity for people with mobility impairments who cannot negotiate the rocky, uneven woodland trails to walk or ride in fresh air and participate in community activities. Killingworth is one of 27 communities receiving grants through the Recreational Trails program, which I worked to expand last year, allowing more projects like this to receive grants.

This grant will allow Killingworth to open Sheldon Park for more people who want to experience nature in their community. Connecticut’s parks and other green spaces are an important part of what make our state such a great place to live and raise a family. I am glad we were able to secure this funding so that people with all abilities can experience Sheldon Park and similar parks throughout the state.

Infrastructure Improvements Coming to Hammonasset State Park

Last month, I announced that the state bond commission has approved funding for critical improvements at Hammonasset Beach State Park. The projects to be funded include the replacement of electrical, water and natural gas systems at Hammonasset Beach State Park. Specifically, allocations would fund utility work and connections involving the Meigs Point Nature Center. These funds are part of a larger utility project within the park with subsequent allocations likely to follow in the near future.

This funding will allow us to create a safer path through the park for pedestrians and bicyclists, hold large charity events, and make Hammonasset an even better place for families to visit. Hammonasset and our other state parks are some of Connecticut’s most important assets. Not only do they make our state more beautiful, but they are a critical component of our region’s economic engine, responsible for over 9,000 private sector jobs and contributing over $1 billion to our local economy every year. State parks are one of the best investments this state can make, and I am glad we were able to secure the funding for this project.
