Environmental Issues Roundtable on Shoreline Radio

Radioshow
play audioI recently had the opportunity to participate in a discussion on some of Connecticut's most pressing environmental issues. The roundtable was hosted by iCRV Radio, an internet radio station dedicated to news from Connecticut's shoreline. I was joined by Eric Hammerling of the CT Forest and Park Association, Don Rankin from the Friends of Hammonasset and Ranger Russ from Hammonasset Beach State Park. You can hear our discussion on how to preserve open space, state parks and Connecticut's other environmental assets by clicking this link.

Celebrating 30 Years of the Center for Medicare Advocacy

Medicare
Last week, I had the opportunity to speak at the 30th anniversary celebration of the Center for Medicare Advocacy. The Center for Medicare Advocacy helps ensure that seniors and people with disabilities receive comprehensive coverage and quality health care services. This incredible organization has done great work throughout its 30 years of service. It was an honor to spend this important occasion with them.

The Center for Medicare Advocacy is a national nonprofit organization staffed by attorneys, nurses, legal assistants and other Medicare experts. They receive thousands of inquiries every year, helping people better understand their benefits and representing them in appeals of Medicare denials. If you need help with Medicare, the Center for Medicare Advocacy can help. You can reach them at their Connecticut office by calling 860-456-7790.

Expanding Access to Health Care with Telehealth

telehealthBy allowing doctors or other health professionals to provide basic health services over the phone or internet, we can ensure that people get the care they need without having to leave their homes. This practice, known as telehealth, greatly improves health outcomes by allowing patients to be monitored between physician office visits, and reach medical experts when one is not available in their area. This week, I joined the state Senate in passing a bill that expands Connecticut's telehealth laws to include speech and language pathologists, audiologists and respiratory care practitioners.

Telehealth is a cost-effective and efficient way to provide high quality services. Respiratory care therapists have reported that telehealth has become invaluable in their work with patients. Using Skype or another internet video broadcast service, patients and therapists can see each other over the internet connection. By checking in through the internet or on a phone, the respiratory care therapists were able to reduce the symptoms and triggers of their chronic lung disease that can lead to reduce acute care interventions. Speech and language therapists have reported similar success by using telehealth.

I believe this new telehealth legislation will help connect patients and medical professionals more regularly and conveniently, allowing for better health outcomes at a lower cost. Now that the bill has passed from the Senate, it moves on to the House of Representatives for further action.
