Listening to Seniors

I recently was given the opportunity to participate in a senior issues forum at the Canoe Brook Senior Center in Branford. We had a lively discussion about a variety of issues, including access to home care and transportation.

I was happy to tell the seniors about a recent state investment I secured for 9 Town Transit. This public bus service will begin proving expanding transportation options to seniors and others on the Connecticut Shoreline and throughout the Greater New Haven Area.

We also spoke about an initiative I launched to expedite approval of home health care. As many seniors know, it can take an extended period of time for home health services to be approved. This delay in service can prevent seniors from receiving the care they need in a timely manner, and may result in costly hospital visits. I launched a successful pilot program that has begun offering much quicker approval of these services, ensuring that seniors get the care they need when they need it. I will continue working to improve this program and would like to see it become a statewide standard.

Walking for Life in Branford

As a childhood bone cancer survivor, I understand first-hand the importance of research and access to care. Last week, I joined dozens of shoreline residents at Relay for Life in Branford. Over 350 people participated in the event, raising nearly $53,000. The event was a great success, and I was very happy to be a part of it. If you were unable to attend, but are still interested in donating to the effort, you can do so online.

Relay for Life is the signature fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. Money raised by volunteers goes toward research to help us better combat cancer, and services for families currently fighting the disease.

Honoring the Work of The Connecticut Tumblers

CT tumblers
I joined my colleague, Representative Sean Scanlon, to present citations from the General Assembly commending the great work of the Connecticut Tumblers. The Tumblers are a Guilford-based unified sports gymnastics team where people with physical and intellectual disabilities practice and compete alongside people without disabilities. The team does amazing work helping athletes.

Members of the Connecticut Tumblers come from across the Shoreline and the Greater New Haven region. They train once a week at the Guilford Community Center. If you are interested in learning more about the Connecticut Tumblers, you can contact them through their website.
