Making Sure Student Data Privacy is Secure

Sschool privacy
Schools and educators are relying more on resources from the internet and mobile devices every day. When students access those resources we need to ensure their personal information is protected and secure. I led passage of a new law that strengthens data privacy by restricting how student information may be used. Contractors and operators of websites, online services, or mobile applications will be held to strict privacy standards and prohibitions against sharing or selling personally identifiable student information.

Expanding Connecticut's Innovation Economy

CTNEXTThis year, I joined my Democratic colleagues in passing legislation that will encourage Connecticut's entrepreneurs to start the businesses they have dreamed of, and provide them with the support they need to be successful. This month, a key piece of that legislation has gone into effect, with CTNext taking applications for Connecticut's new "Innovation Places." These Innovation Places will combine entrepreneurship support with physical locations conducive to the creation of startup companies.

innovation places
Communities interested in establishing an Innovation Place are eligible for grants to help them conduct a strategic planning process to identify emerging relevant conditions and to build a master plan that leverages the resources and assets in each community to create new opportunities. Should their plan be approved, the communities can then receive additional grants that will help develop a business incubator, coworking space, expanded technology infrastructure and more.

Applications for planning grants are now being accepted and are open through Monday, Sept. 12, 2016. Visit ctnext.com for more information on the program or to apply.

Encouraging the Development of Microgrids

electric gridMass power outages caused by severe weather events in recent years have led to Connecticut funding new microgrids that can provide power to water treatment plants, emergency shelters, hospitals, and police and fire stations in the event of future weather-related power outages. I supported a bill that furthers microgrid development by allowing the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to include matching funds or low-interest loans for more energy storage and generation projects. The bill also expands the types of projects from which electric distribution companies such as Eversource and United Illuminating must purchase renewable energy credits.
