East Hartford Middle School Honored for STEM Program

Safe Sleep
Recently, I joined my colleagues in the House of Representatives at East Hartford Middle School where we got to learn more about the JASON Learning STEM program that sixth-and seventh-grade students are participating in.

It was exciting to hear from the schools staff about just how powerful an impact this curriculum is having on our students in the area of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Because of this program, East Hartford students will be better prepared to take on the tough classes in high school and beyond, which will open doors to exciting and good-paying careers right here in Connecticut.

While the 'Lightbulb Factory' Moves Out, We're Building Manufacturing Jobs Here

Safe Sleep
I'm a "glass half-full" kind of guy, so you'll excuse me if I don't dwell on GE moving a mere 200 jobs out of state (while keeping 600 other jobs in Norwalk!) and focus instead on UTC's decision to keep 25,000 jobs in Connecticut while simultaneously building a Pratt & Whitney engineering "center of excellence" and new labs at the UTC Research Center in East Hartford.

Safe Sleep
Partnering with UTC, our legislature made a $500 million investment in aerospace and engineering that includes Pratt & Whitney's East Hartford world headquarters. I think it's safe to say we have more PhDs per square foot than Yale on this campus. So while many seem to want to lament the lightbulb factory's 'for sale' sign, I'm more interested in the thousands of construction and other high-skills jobs that have been created right here in our district as we continue to help our state's largest employer to grow and prosper. That's the reality, and I think it's something we should celebrate.
