Helping Veteran-owned Small Businesses

Senator Looney at Vets press confOn Wednesday I stood side-by-side with military veteran small-business owners and a bipartisan group of state senators in support of a bill to support veteran-owned small businesses by providing additional bidding preferences under state contracting laws.

Later that day, the Senate passed the legislation making Connecticut the most "vetrepreneur" friendly state in the nation.

Retaining and attracting veteran-owned businesses is a priority for the Senate Democrats as part of our larger commitment to those who served our nation. This legislation is a continuation of a multi-year focus by the General Assembly--led by the Senate Democrats, on improving the lives of our vets, supporting them in every way possible, and helping to ensure they can earn a living.

Investing in Our Students

This week I helped lead passage of a bill that will expand higher education access by permitting students participating in the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and other undocumented immigrants to apply for financial aid at Connecticut state colleges and universities.

Senate Bill 147 will allow undocumented students access to institutional financial aid at Connecticut state colleges and universities. Undocumented students have been paying into the institutional aid pool for years. The bill will enable undocumented students to begin accessing some of the money that all students have already been putting in.

Many of these students have lived in our state for virtually their entire lives; they are our neighbors and our children's friends and classmates. This is a smart investment in talented and hardworking Connecticut students who will be a significant part of Connecticut's economic future. This bill represents the next step along this path toward equity.
