Educating Our Children and Preventing Cancer

healthcareThis week, I testified in support of Senate Bill 377, An Act Considering the School Health Curriculum and Cancer Awareness. The bill would add the instruction in the performance of self-examinations for breast cancer and testicular cancer in the school health curriculum.

Breast cancer is overwhelming at any age, but women who get the disease in their twenties, their teens or younger face a host of unique issues that complicate an already devastating diagnosis. Being aware of the signs of breast cancer and teaching young girls to know their bodies could address the awareness that often is lacking in adult women. Educating girls when they are young lays the foundation for a lifetime of breast health, and establishing positive breast health habits when girls are young--habits such as healthy eating, exercise and smoking avoidance--has the potential to lower future breast cancer rates.

Young males also need to be aware of testicular cancer and methods to detect possible cancer. Testicular cancer is rare in young men, but it is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in young men between the ages of 18-25. When diagnosed early, there is a 100 percent cure rate.

With this bill I hope to build awareness and save lives.
