Protect Yourself from Fraud and Internet Scams

I recently joined the Trumbull Police Department to hold an informational forum that taught attendees how to protect themselves and loved ones from fraud. The Trumbull Police Department and United States Postal Service Inspector provided tips to remain safe from the kind of fraud and scams they have encountered throughout their law enforcement careers.

While scams are all too common these days, it is easy to protect yourself and loved ones by being skeptical and thinking things through. Scammers will send you an email, call your phone, or even show up at your door to try to steal your personal information or valuables. Before they can do any of that, they need to win you over or convince you that you need to listen to them. All it takes to prevent identity theft or any other scam is a moment to stop, think things through, and realize that something sounds suspicious.

This time of year, it is very common for scammers to pose as the IRS in order to gain access to your sensitive information. Here are some good tips on how IRS imposter scams work and the red flags to look out for to keep your personal information safe and to avoid becoming a victim.
