Standing With Our Police

VIDEO: PTSD Coverage for 1st Responders
I was proud to stand with members of the law enforcement community in support of Senate Bill 134, which would extend workers' compensation coverage to include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) suffered by first responders in the line of duty.

The 21 years I worked in public safety as a corrections officer allowed me to see firsthand that there are consequences of working in a very difficult and hazardous-duty environment, and that witnessing extremely traumatic events can lead to significant mental health concerns that don't allow our police officers and other first responders to be at their best on the job when left unaddressed.

I believe, as do many of my colleagues in the Senate, that it is wrong to distinguish between a physical and a psychological injury when it comes to workers' compensation.

It is important to recognize that the state has not done the best it can on mental health issues, and I think we need to do better.
