"Granny Pod" Bill Passes Senate

Safe Sleep
I was extremely happy when the Senate passed Senate Bill 88, An Act Establishing a Task Force to Study the Zoning of Temporary Healthcare Structures--otherwise knowns as "Granny Pods"--with unanimous and bipartisan support.

As Connecticut's population ages, it's important for us to think of creative ways to allow elderly people to stay close to home or to family members, and "Granny Pods" are a way to do that.

This legislation establishes a task force to study the zoning of temporary health care structures, and to develop a model zoning ordinance for temporary health care units.

The units would be approximately 300 square feet, ADA compliant, and allow those who use them to have a safe, single-level housing unit on their own property--providing residents with an option other than moving into a nursing care facility or remodeling their existing home to meet the person's current health needs.

I believe this legislation will go a long way toward our eventual goal of allowing people who require some level of assistance or special accessibility to stay on their own property or on that of a family caregiver. In the long run, these temporary healthcare structures--or "Granny Pods"--could save families a significant amount of money. Instead of placing a family member in a nursing home, residents would able to age in place, and allow family member to participate in the care of the person.

Join the Effort to Cleanup Our Community

Now that spring is finally here--and actually feels like it!--I hope you will join a coalition of community members for our annual Community Cleanup in Norwich on Saturday, April 30.

Please take some time out of your day to help me, St. Vincent de Paul Place, Reliance House and The Last Green Valley collect and remove the trash that has accumulated over the winter months and to beautify our neighborhood.

We'll be meeting at the old Mr. Big parking lot on 8th Street, where the cleanup will kick off at 9 a.m. and run through 11 a.m.

Bring the whole family, your neighbors and friends, or join a team of community members to help us keep the spirit of Earth Day rolling all year long.
