Southeastern CT Jobs Study Bill Passes Senate

jobsA bill that will commission a study to help our region make smart and informed decisions about the future of Southeastern Connecticut's workforce and economy is a step closer to being enacted, following recent action in the Senate.

I fought hard for Senate Bill 398--which would require the state Departments of Economic and Community Development and Labor to study the transition of former casino employees to employment in other sectors--and was pleased it passed the Senate with bipartisan, unanimous support.

We know that casino-based employment has and will continue to change. While I am dedicated to protecting jobs in that sector, it is prudent that we prepare our community for other quality employment opportunities in the future.

Moving this subject past the "conversation phase" to the planning stage is the smart thing to do, and the right thing to do, to ensure that our families continue to have good quality employment opportunities close to home.

Helping Veteran-owned Businesses

I am incredibly proud of the commitment our state has made over the last several years to Connecticut's veterans. As an Army veteran, I was proud to work with my colleagues in the Senate to pass a new bill that will give preference to veteran-owned businesses in this state.

In addition to ensuring our government enacts legislation that provides the support and care our servicemen and women need when they return to civilian life, we should also strive to make it easier for veterans to become businessowners, entrepreneurs and employers.

This legislation does that and more. My colleagues and I will continue to do all that we can to make Connecticut the most veteran-friendly state in the U.S., because when we make those who serve the United States our priority, we all reap the rewards.
