Summer Food Programs for Kids

EHCOver the summer break, many families in our region have a difficult time making ends meet when it comes to budgeting for extra meals for their children who are out of school.

Those with children who receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch during the school year should be aware of the numerous locations that are available throughout our community where school-aged children can receive nutritious, balanced meals all summer long. Last year, End Hunger CT! served nearly 42,000 Connecticut children summer meals--those numbers show that this program is making a big difference in the lives of thousands of our kids!

But we can do more. Just one in four Connecticut students who are eligible to participate in the summer meals program do so. It is my hope that we can reach more of these children by raising awareness about the program and locations throughout the region.

I encourage you to share this information with your neighbors and friends--no child should go hungry this summer. Thanks to the USDA, State Department of Education, our local school systems and non-profit agencies, we can alleviate some of the stress that some families face when it comes to food insecurity during what many say is the "hungriest time of the year" for low-to-moderate income families.

Please visit the End Hunger CT! website to find a summer meal site near you!

Sub Base Turns 100

Sub
It was a pleasure to attend the Centennial Celebration of the New London Naval Submarine Base and Naval Submarine School at the Historic Ship Nautilus this month.

Our Navy remains the greatest in the world due to the investments that have been and continue to be made in our base, and I believe we will continue to lead the world in this area of technology and military strength over the next one hundred years.

I am so proud of Southeastern Connecticut's rich history when it comes to protecting our country, and thankful to the 10,000 military and civilian employees who have transformed the submarine base into what it is today.

I am also grateful to Congressman Joe Courtney who continues to successfully advocate on behalf of our sub base and personnel in Washington!

Eastern Regional Mental Health Board Award

MHB
It was truly an honor to be recognized with the Eastern Regional Mental Health Board's Leadership Award at their annual board meeting in June.

The work that our regional board does is so important to our community, especially those among us who are facing the greatest challenges and barriers. I am proud to work with this exceptional group of people to find solutions to the issues many residents in our area face, like transportation--without which many cannot get to critical medical appointments, to jobs, or meet their basic needs.

It is with deep gratitude that I accept this recognition, but I believe that those who are on the ground every day with the Eastern Regional Mental Health Board are the real leaders and champions when it comes to improving the lives of those who need a hand up in our community, and am thankful for the work they continue to do.
