Supporting Local Farmers

VIDEO: CT Grown
Our district is truly fortunate to have a significant number of local produce farmers.

I love that you can purchase the food you plan to feed your family from the person who grew it on the day it was picked - you can't beat that when it comes to eating fresh, healthy and local!

I recently had the opportunity to tour Olivia's Garden on Route 66 in Columbia, where owner Tom Puckett has taken four acres of land and produced an amazing business that feeds his family, and the families who purchase their food through CSAs and at farmer's markets in our region.

Please consider buying your veggies from local farm stands and farmers' markets in our district this summer and fall - not only will you get the best quality for your buck, but you'll also be helping to support local business and local families.

Our area is proud of our agricultural roots, so let's support our local growers every chance we get!

Hillandale Farm Moving to "Cage-Free" Eggs; Poised to Invest $60M+ in CT

There is more good news on the horizon when it comes to farming in Eastern Connecticut!

Hillandale Egg Farm has announced it will begin construction of two new cage-free egg facilities at its Bozrah location within the next several months.

Following the tragic fire at its Lebanon facility this spring, I am also very glad that Hillandale has chosen to make their new facilities in Bozrah cage-free, because it shows that they are listening to their customers and others who have concerns about the health and safety of the hens on their farms, and are being responsive to those concerns going forward.

The new cage-free egg facility at Hillandale's Bozrah farm is also expected to create 65 new jobs. A separate cage-free growing facility--where newly hatched chicks are raised--will also be constructed and will create an additional ten jobs.

Hillandale is also planning to invest between $60 million and $70 million in Connecticut over the next several years--this is good news for our region, and our state!
