You Don't Have to Be Perfect to Be "Perfected"

Senator Winfield talking to students
I recently had the opportunity to speak with several dozen students at Capital Community College (CCC) in Hartford about taking on hard work and challenges now, in order to define the future in which they want to live.

The students were at CCC for the JAG CT 2016 Career Development Conference this month. High school seniors from East Hartford, Manchester, New Britain and New Haven were there to hear from a variety of professionals about future career options, higher education and developing the skills necessary to being successful in the workforce, and I am sure they got a lot of sound advice from the participating speakers.

But I had a somewhat different perspective to offer these young adults. I know where these students come from, who they are, and what they need to know--because I came from where they are starting out. We have a common background, one that doesn't always present the same opportunities or challenges as kids from other neighborhoods, in other cities and towns.

And in starting my own life from a similar position in which these young people find themselves, now on the brink of adulthood, I learned what it takes to succeed. It's simple to say, but not always easy to do. It takes desire, the fortitude to make tough choices and the ability to make every effort to achieve your goals. It takes resilience and the initiative to take on opportunities as they come along, even when it's difficult.

I know, and they know, that no one will do it for them. I believe the best advice to students is to be honest about what it takes to achieve the goals you set for yourself. They, like I did, must challenge themselves to work harder and create the future life you want to live.

You don't have to be perfect to be "perfected" overtime and through effort, and I hope the students who attended the event understood my message. It's not about where you begin--it's about how you structure your path forward.

I am passionate about the future of these--and all--young men and women in our cities and towns, and I am hopeful that they will take the advice of someone who has been where they are now and chose to succeed. They can make that choice too, and I hope they will.
