Championing Campaign Finance Reform

CEP program
Recently, I had the opportunity to participate on a panel of elected officials in Washington D.C. to discuss money in politics, and how our state's 'clean elections program' allows candidates who don't have a lot of money or political connections to successfully run for office.

In Connecticut, the CEP system--in which the number of small donors a candidate amasses allows that candidate to access public funding to run for office--was vital to my chances as a non-endorsed, non-connected candidate in my first race for office.

And that is the way it should be, because it empowers our residents to be a part of the process of choosing the candidate that they want to represent them. In turn, candidates and elected officials can spend more time listening to the concerns of their constituents in order to better serve them, instead spending the majority of their time fundraising.

I believe that the system of public financing increases our voice and the diversity in our electoral system. I was happy to join the Brennan Center for Justice and other organizations to highlight the benefits of a system like ours for all campaigns in the U.S.
