New Law Improves Access to Retirement Savings Plans

retirement
I recently had the opportunity to join several of my colleagues from the General Assembly at the Atwater Senior Center to talk about one of the most important laws that we have been able to enact this year--the Connecticut Retirement Security Program.

We know that far too many people get to retirement age without adequate savings to supplement their Social Security benefits--partly because they don't have access to a 401(k) retirement savings plan through their jobs, and partly because many workers don't have the extra money in their budget to invest somewhere on their own, which can be costly.

What we have done is establish a retirement savings program for private-sector employees, in which workers will be automatically enrolled--though they can opt out. Under the program, a 3 percent payroll deduction will automatically be placed in a Roth IRA account for the employee, which will continue to grow over time until that person is ready to retire. Because the state-administered program is overseen by a quasi-public/private partnership, it will be more cost effective, and employers aren't required to match contributions.

This is a smart step forward that will significantly assist the 600,000 Connecticut workers who currently want to save for retirement but don't have a way to do so through their employers.

I support this groundbreaking legislation that stands to benefit our community members who are too often left out in the cold when it comes to accessing these types of programs.

This law will go into effect in January of 2018. No one should have to work their whole life only to struggle to get by when it's time to retire. I believe it will make a significant difference in the future of low-to-moderate income workers' lives.

NHV Bail Fund Community Meeting

Community Bonds, an organization dedicated to promoting racial and economic justice in the pretrial process of the criminal justice system, will be holding a community meeting on June 22nd to discuss the establishment of a charitable bail fund in New Haven.

Before their organization--the Connecticut Bail Fund--begins operations in New Haven, they want to hear our community's thoughts on the project.

As your state senator, you know I care deeply about fighting the inequality that currently exists in our criminal justice system. Not having access to bail money when a person is arrested--especially on allegations of a minor crime or a crime they did not commit--can completely derail that person's life while they wait in jail for their day in court or, worse, plead guilty to a crime they did not commit just to get back to their lives, families and jobs.

I encourage you to attend this meeting and share your opinions on this subject.

It will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 22nd, at the Stetson Branch Library on Dixwell Avenue in New Haven.

For more information you can visit Connecticut Bail Fund's website.

Free Dental Care for Vets

veteransOn Saturday, June 25th, the Aspen Dental practice in West Haven will be participating in a National Day of Service, by providing free dental care to veterans who book an appointment.

Too many of our veterans don't have access oral healthcare, and I encourage you to spread the word about this program.

If you are a veteran call 1-844-AspenHMM to schedule an appointment at the Aspen Dental on Saw Mill Road, and be sure to share this opportunity with other veterans you know locally!
