Yale to Host Free Screening of Local Documentary "The Hill"

The Hill photo
In partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program and the National Clinician Scholars Program, the Yale School of Medicine will be hosting a screening of "The Hill" on Tuesday evening.

A film by Lisa Molomot, "The Hill" is a documentary about residents in New Haven's Hill neighborhood who protested the city's demolition of nearly 100 homes owned primarily by minority families. The city displaced residents through the use of eminent domain in order to clear the land to build a new K-8 school between Davenport Avenue and Congress Avenue.

The battle between Hill neighbors--assisted by the New Haven Urban Design League--and the city went all the way to U.S. District Court, though the judge eventually ruled in favor of the city.

I encourage you to attend the screening of this film, which documents the process of eminent domain--a practice that people sometimes think ended long ago, or believe can't or won't happen again in the future.

While the Hill community was unable to save their homes, this documentary shows that regular, everyday people can organize and stand up for themselves, and fight to make their voices heard. It also shows how important it is to be civically engaged, and to stay informed about what local officials and city planners are planning when it comes to 'urban development projects' in New Haven and elsewhere.

"The Hill" will be shown Tuesday, August 9, at the Cohen Auditorium which is located 203 South Frontage Road in New Haven. The event is from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. and will include a discussion led by panelists and light refreshments after the screening. The event is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend.

You can view a trailer for the "The Hill" at www.thehillfilm.com.
