Welcome Back, Students!

Senator Winfield welcomes studentsIt's that time of year--back to the books for our kids, and we had a great turnout for our #BecauseYouMatter welcome back to school events in New Haven.

You and I know there is nothing more important than our children's education, and we need to show them that they matter and that what they will accomplish in school this year matters too. Keeping our kids excited about coming to school will keep their love of learning intact forever!

I love coming together with other professionals and role models to support, celebrate and encourage our kids--thank you to those who participate, and if you want to join us, you are always welcome.

We will continue cheering on our students at the beginning of the school day at different schools throughout New Haven this year and let our young people know it's #BecauseYouMatter!

Fighting to Close Pay Day Loan Loopholes

Recently a bipartisan group of state lawmakers joined me in requesting that a proposed federal rule from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau regulating payday lending be as strict as the one we put in place in Connecticut.

I'm happy that there is action on the federal level to put rules in place so that short-term loan shops, or "payday lenders," can't charge out of control interest rates to trap people in a cycle of always owing more money than they have, sending them into a spiral of debt.

We passed a law in 2015 which declares loans with illegally high interest rates null and void in Connecticut, and the federal government should do the same. This year, we also passed a law that extends protections from predatory lenders to all residents, in line with the Military Lending Act. Not one of our residents should be taken advantage of in tough times by these companies, especially those who have the least and are working hard to make ends meet.

We need to take a stand against predatory lenders. These companies circumvent loopholes and are responsible for ruining the lives of individuals and families, and they must be held accountable.
