Connecticut's Booming Aerospace Manufacturing Sector

Sikorsky helicopterLast fall, Pratt & Whitney, Electric Boat and Sikorsky reaffirmed their commitment to Connecticut, announcing plans to expand operations and increase jobs. This is great news for students, job-seekers and those currently employed at our state's major aerospace companies, as these increases are expected to keep generations of people employed in good-paying jobs. It is also a major boost for Connecticut's smaller manufacturers, who produce parts and other goods for use by the larger companies.

Colin Cooper, CEO of the Whitcraft Group, a manufacturing business in Eastford, Connecticut, recently submitted an op-ed to the Hartford Courant explaining how growth in manufacturing has been highly successful as a result of the business they get due to their presence in Connecticut. Cooper says that he gets calls every week from other states, offering financial incentives for him to relocate his business. Despite that, Whitcraft is staying in Connecticut and expanding here, due to the proximity of Pratt & Whitney, Electric Boat and Sikorsky, as well as his belief that "Connecticut has the most skilled and knowledgeable aerospace technicians and engineers in the world. And that state-run programs that train and supply that workforce are top-notch."

Whitcraft signed a 10-year, $235 million agreement with Pratt & Whitney to continue manufacturing and supplying parts to them. Whitcraft has been able to greatly increase the number of people it employs, and is planning on growing in the future. Pratt & Whitney recently announced that they are planning to hire about 8,000 new people in Connecticut, and Electric Boat made a similar commitment to expand and create new jobs. Several months ago, I joined my colleagues in approving an agreement which guarantees Sikorsky will stay in our state, retaining and creating 8,000 jobs and infusing an estimated $69.2 billion into Connecticut's economy and support approximately 24,601 jobs through the investment.
