Yale Medical Campus Community to Hold Open Forum on Traffic Safety Thursday After Tragic Fatal Accident

Last week, tragedy struck our community when Yale New Haven Hospital employee Melissa Tancredi, 42, of Waterbury died after being hit by a car on York Street and South Frontage Road. I wanted to reach out with some more information about this tragic fatal accident, as I have been receiving calls from many of you about the incident.

Many of your calls were motivated by an email sent out to the Yale medical community by a dean who mistakenly thought that South Frontage was a state road and encouraged people to contact their representatives to push for oversight and increased safety precautions. The dean has apologized and a second email was sent out correcting that instruction. Instead, people have been encouraged to attend an open forum run by the Yale Medical Campus Traffic Safety Committee.

The Yale Medical Campus Community Open Forum on Traffic Safety will be held this Thursday, January 26th from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. in the Donald J. Cohen Auditorium, located in the Yale Child Study Center at 230 South Frontage Road.

While police continue to investigate the accident, early signs indicate that speeding and distracted driving may have been factors. The driver was in a dedicated left-hand turn lane. Cars in this lane must turn left--instead, the driver continued straight and drove onto the sidewalk at the other side of the intersection, hitting Ms. Tancredi. Initial review of the traffic camera video shows that the driver was travelling faster than the flow of traffic and only began to brake in the final moments before impact.

The Yale Medical Campus Traffic Safety Committee is working with City staff to evaluate at the current layout of the intersection for improvements to traffic flow, as well as the multiple blocks leading up to this intersection on South Frontage Road. As we await the results on the accident report, the City is also examining traffic enforcement options and driver education regarding the dangers of distracted driving and speeding in order to combat future traffic fatalities.

My thoughts and prayers are with Melissa's family and with the Yale medical community during this sad time.
