Economic Summit Follow-Up

Summit
This month, the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce hosted a follow-up to the Connecticut Shoreline Economic Planning Summit that we organized last spring. Business leaders from throughout the region attended to speak with each other and their legislative representatives about opportunities to work together and strengthen the shoreline’s economy.

Through communication and collaboration we can find new and effective ways to improve the economy in our region. We discussed a range of issues, including transportation, workforce development, health care and energy. I am very grateful to everyone who attended and participated in the event. If you were unable to make it to the Summit but have an idea you would like to share, please don’t hesitate to contact my office.

Join Me in Supporting Local, Small Businesses

The holiday shopping season is upon us, and I hope you will join me this year in supporting our local, small businesses. Studies show that for every $100 spent at a neighborhood business roughly $68 stays in our local economy. The same amount spent at a large business keeps only $43 in our local economy. If all the people of any average American city were to shift just 10 percent of their spending from online stores and chains to local businesses, it would bring an additional $235 million into the local economy every year.

Shopping locally can also have a big environmental impact. Big box stores have many of their supplies shipped internationally, generating processing, packaging, and transportation waste that pollute our environment. The United States imports over $2.2 trillion worth of goods each year which are shipped to stores around the country. This process consumes 11 billion gallons of fuel and generates 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide. The packaging used to ship these goods is also an environmental hazard. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the United States produces 11.9 million tons of plastic packaging each year, and 90 percent of it ends up in a landfill after just one use. Local companies buy from other local companies, keeping money in our communities while also ensuring that products don't have to be shipped halfway around the world before going on store shelves.

This year let's show our support for Connecticut's economy, environment, small businesses and our friends and neighbors by shopping small and local.
