Doyle Hosts Successful Ninth Annual Ninth District Senior Expo

Dozens of seniors and vendors attended annual event

CROMWELL, CT—Dozens of seniors were in attendance for Senator Paul Doyle’s (D-Wethersfield) Senior Expo. This is the ninth year in a row that Senator Doyle has held this event, which aims to provide seniors with information on state and non-profit resources that are available to them.

“I was happy to see such a number of seniors come out to hear about the many organizations around Connecticut that are here to help them,” said Senator Doyle. “There is so much available for seniors, but far too many of them are not aware of what is out there. I hold these annual Senior Expos to put all those organizations in one place and help seniors in my district connect with them. I look forward to holding these events every year, and will be back here next year for the Tenth Annual Ninth District Senior Expo.”

Dozens of seniors came to speak with Senator Doyle and the numerous vendors in attendance. Vendors included the Connecticut AARP, Connecticut Legal Services, Middlesex Health Care Center, the Office of the Healthcare Advocate and more. Vendors provided free health screenings and consultations on a variety of issues.

Senator Doyle provided attendees with a document detailing all the laws passed in 2015 that impact the lives of Connecticut’s seniors. One important law passed year is the CARE Act, which helps ensure that family caregivers are given follow-up care instructions when a loved one is discharged from the hospital. This will help ensure a better recovery for the patient while also reducing costly hospital readmissions. The CARE Act requires hospitals to:

  • Provide each patient with the opportunity to designate a caregiver during the patient’s admission to the hospital;
  • Make reasonable attempts to notify the designated caregiver if the patient is to be discharged back to his or her home; and
  • Provide the caregiver with instructions on how to perform medication management, wound care, injections or other medical tasks for the patient when the patient returns home.
