Duff Highlights the Importance of Home Heating Assistance and Operation Fuel

Darien Social Services Dept. to become an Operation Fuel partner

DARIEN, CT—Today State Senator Bob Duff (D-Norwalk), Chair of the General Assembly’s Energy & Technology Committee, joined with officials at the Darien Social Services Department to appeal for private donations to Operation Fuel, an organization that helps to provide energy assistance for eligible households.

“Our economy is still recovering, and that means more people than ever need help with their heating bills, especially senior citizens on fixed incomes. Operation Fuel is a great organization that helps thousands of families across the state to stay warm on New England’s coldest days. I hope that those who are able will consider making a private contribution to their very worthy cause,” said Senator Duff. “I am very happy that Operation Fuel will now be partnering with the Town of Darien to increase their outreach in our community.”

Since August, Operation Fuel has provided energy assistance grants to a total of 112 households in Darien and Norwalk. Of these, 51 of the grants were for elderly residents. This coming winter, the Darien Social Services Department will become a fuel bank when it joins Operation Fuel’s network of more than 100 fuel banks statewide.

The annual home energy affordability gap for Connecticut households with incomes at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level was nearly $662 million during 2012 and more than $15.6 million for households in the 25th senatorial district, according to the Home Energy Affordability Gap: Connecticut (2012) report. This averages out to a statewide home energy affordability gap of about $2,304 per household, which is the difference between what households can afford to pay and what they actually owe for their annual energy bills.

Operation Fuel is Connecticut’s only statewide emergency energy assistance program. The non-profit has given out more than $2.5 million in winter energy assistance throughout Connecticut while giving out about $500,000 this past summer for a total of about $3 million since July 1, 2012.
